New York State Health Insurance (NYSHIP) Coverage for Drug Rehab Treatment 

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a specific use disorder that includes addictions to prescription pain medications and synthetic opioids like heroin and fentanyl.  OUD is believed to affect approximately 3 million individuals in the U.S., and over 16 million around the world. Opioids have been the cause of the most drug-related deaths in the U.S. compared to all other substances. 

A notable difference between OUD and other substance use disorders is that medication-assisted treatments (MAT) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help provide relief from withdrawal symptoms and decrease the frequency and intensity of cravings. MAT options are often combined with other behavioral health treatments, and available in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings. 

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is marked by persistent, and uncontrollable use of cocaine. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans are struggling with CUD, and even more on a global scale. Cocaine has been tied to an increasing rate of fatal overdoses, with about 20% of all fatal overdoses in 2017 involving cocaine.  

Individuals living with CUD have been found to have higher rates of polysubstance use and dual diagnoses, which has a direct impact on the treatment approaches used. Approximately 77.8% of those living with CUD report simultaneous use of other substances, including alcohol and opioids. MAT options for CUD have not been approved by the FDA, which means that those who do receive treatment are receiving symptomatic care.

Benzodiazepine misuse and abuse have risen in the U.S. since this medication began being used to treat mental health conditions in 1960. These medications can be used to effectively cope with and manage anxiety symptoms, though they are abused by an estimated 2% of those who are prescribed the medications. 

Individuals who are abusing benzodiazepines require professional support and supervision before reducing or stopping their use, due to the physical risks associated with detoxification. In many cases, your healthcare provider will use a tapering approach, to gradually, and safely, help your body adjust to the changes that occur in the early stages of recovery.

An estimated 1.6 million individuals in the United States have been living with a methamphetamine use disorder within the last 12 months. Meth was believed to cause an estimated 32,537 overdoses in 2021 and continues to be a public health concern in the U.S.

There are no FDA-approved medications to treat a methamphetamine use disorder, which means that treatment often focuses on symptom management and behavioral health interventions including motivational interviewing, contingency management, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Several other substances have the potential to be misused and abused. The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics indicated that commonly misused stimulants include prescriptions like Adderall, Vyvanse, Dexedrine, bath salts, and diet aids. Commonly abused hallucinogens include Ketamine, mushrooms, LSD, and MDMA.

Several depressant medications have the potential to be abused and cause physical dependency, including barbiturates, Rohypnol, Ambien, Sonata, and Quaaludes. Inhalants produce chemical vapors that are inhaled, including various volatile solvents, aerosols, gases, and nitrates. This can include glues, paint thinners, degreasers, nitrous oxide, spray paints, and nitrates.
