A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an outpatient program for clients that require a higher level of care than traditional outpatient treatment. During daily outpatient visits to our center, clients receive comprehensive addiction treatment services but do not remain in the center overnight.PHPs are a step-down service that benefits those who have already completed an inpatient program and do not need around-the-clock supervision, but instead, a particularly high level of support. Once the client completes a PHP, he or she may transition to a standard outpatient program. During PHP, the client visits the recovery center 3-5 days per week for a few hours each day while still residing at a personal residence. A PHP is more intensive than most outpatient programs, which typically meet fewer times per week.
Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
During a PHP, doctors and nurses on staff administer medication as needed to reduce cravings and mitigate severe symptoms of withdrawal. In addition to medical care, PHPs, sometimes referred to as day treatment programs, provide services such as behavioral therapy, individual therapy, and group therapy, and counseling.Clients in a PHP engage in an intensive recovery program and work closely with several addiction treatment professions, such as physicians, nurses, therapist, psychiatrists, and social workers.
Aftercare Planning
Treatment professionals help prepare the client for discharge by developing an aftercare plan, which includes relapse prevention techniques such as support groups, partnered supportive housing, and counseling.
Co-Occurring Conditions
Most PHPs are equipped to identify and address co-occurring mental health conditions such as generalized depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and more.
